Jules Perlmutter attended The Cooper UnionArt School in New York City. He graduated from Yale University School of Design with a BFA in painting. At Yale he studied painting with Josef Albers formerly with the Bauhaus in Germany; Albers’ color theories strongly influenced Perlmutter’s use and manipulation of color in his work. While at Yale he was invited to exhibit at a new Boston gallery – Kanegis Gallery and following Yale he worked at MOMA in New York while continuing to paint
He was awarded a U.S. government Fulbright grant for painting and study in France in 1962. He remained there for three years and during that time was a member of Les Ateliers de l’Association Pere Lachaise, exhibiting in official showings under sponsorship and subsidization by the administration of the 20th Arrondissement of Paris; in 1963 and again in 1964 he exhibited with Art International in Monaco.
Returning to New York in 1965 he shifted his creative energies to graphic design returning to painting in the 1990’s following cardio-vascular incidents. Back to Paris in the mid 90’s he resumed painting. His work became increasingly expressionist in approach. Interest both with layered paint and papers focused on inner states of mind; his objective was to probe and reveal with paint and other means these inspirations.
From 1994 until 2002 he exhibited in Paris, London, Berlin and Switzerland. As a member of Les Ateliers de l’Association Pere Lachaise he again exhibited in the local Paris community. Exhibitions in New York included the Peretz, the Hintersteiner and The North Shore Reconstructionist galleries and he also opened his studio for public viewing annually.
In 2002 he settled in upstate New York where he has exhibited with the Blue Victorian in Jeffersonville, the Beck Gallery at the Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville, Whipworks Gallery in Windsor and the Red Eft Gallery in Wurtsboro.. His additional exhibits in New York have included The Andrews Gallery spaces and the Hudson Guild.
